Obituary For Patricia “Annie” Schaeffer

“Self-education is, I firmly believe, the only kind of education there is.” ― Sir Isaac Asimov

Patricia “Annie” Schaeffer made a choice early on to make hers a life dedicated to learning. Born in the summer heat of St. Louis, MO, on August 26, 1957, to parents George and Irene Schaeffer. Patricia graduated from Bishop DuBourg High School in St Louis, a place that can be thanked for the spark of interest from a wonderful drama professor that led to her second lifelong love of storytelling and acting.

With self-described “itchy feet” that urged her to explore, she took some time after graduation to travel the world. Along the way met James McCune and they were married in 1982. Together they welcomed their daughter Eva McCune into the world. After her relationship with her husband ended, she continued to love her daughter unconditionally, working hard and giving herself selflessly to ensure their life together was stable. She proudly watched her daughter grow into the woman she is today.

As Patricia continued her life’s journey, her passion for learning continued to direct the path of her life. She attended Harris Stowe State University in St. Louis, MO, and was awarded a rare fellowship to the Lawrence Hall of Sciences in Berkeley, California. From there, she attended Washington University in St Louis for Mathematics. Later in life she also attended Hennepin Technical College for Histology. For her, learning didn’t just exist in the classrooms and halls of our education establishments, it surrounded her life.

Her love of learning and those early drama classes inspired her to take to writing. Patricia self-directed her studies, reading and researching to continuously better her writing. Patricia’s love of storytelling really got to shine when she became a grandmother to her four wonderful grandchildren Leo, Aleksander, Corbin, and Elsa. Grandma was a role that she enjoyed deeply. She loved taking them out for adventures and sharing stories from her life.

Those left to love her memories are daughter Eva Schaeffer (McCune) (Benjamin Rislov); brothers George (Corliss) and Paul Schaeffer; sisters Mary Jo and Carol Schaeffer (Arjomond) and her beloved grandchildren Leo Schaeffer, Aleksander Schaeffer-Rislov, Corbin Rislov and Elsa Rislov.
